Cruz-Perez’s ‘Nosey’s Law’ Bill is Signed into Law
TRENTON – Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez has issued the following statement as Governor Phil Murphy enacted into law her legislation, S-1093, which will prohibit the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling animal acts.
“These beautiful creatures suffer from routine abuse and mistreatment by their handlers for the sake of entertainment,” said Senator Cruz-Perez (D-Camden/Gloucester). “This by no means justifies the emotional and physical abuse animals like Nosey are forced to endure. Nosey is now safe in an animal sanctuary, but the law protects other animals from being abused like she was. Today, New Jersey is taking a stand for animal rights and I hope that other states will follow our example so that this sort of abuse can be eliminated everywhere in the country.”
The law is popularly known as “Nosey’s Law”, named after Nosey the elephant who is virtually crippled by arthritis after a life spent traveling the country to give rides at fairs and flea markets. The arthritis has caused Nosey unnecessary suffering and permanent disability.
