Cunningham Issues Statement on Beatings at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility

Trenton – Senator Sandra Bolden Cunningham issued the following statement expressing her outrage at the most recent abuse of inmates at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, which NJ Advance Media reported:

“I was appalled and disturbed to read of the most recent abuse at Edna Mahan. Not only was it a violation of these women’s rights but the gruesome, unprovoked violence points to deeper issues within the staff culture at the facility. No one who took part in these attacks, or stood by and watched them occur, has any place working in our correctional system. We have seen far too many instances, especially at this facility, of corrections officers abusing inmates for no reason at all. We must do more to protect those incarcerated and ensure those entrusted with their care are not abusing the power dynamics involved in their role. I agree with Senate Majority Leader Weinberg and Senator Greenstein, the Corrections Commissioner and the chief administrator at Edna Mahan must step down immediately.”
