Paramus – Anthony Cureton, an accomplished law enforcement professional with more than 28 years of experience and the president of the Bergen County NAACP, was named the Democratic nominee for Bergen County Sheriff on Tuesday. Cureton secured the nomination by winning an overwhelming number of the ballots cast by Democratic committee members at the Bergen Democrats’ special nominating convention held in Paramus.

“I am honored and humbled that Bergen Democrats have put their faith in me to be their nominee for Sheriff,” said Cureton. “I’m committed to working day in day and day out to keep our families safe and secure, tackle the opioid epidemic and enhance community policing. As Sheriff, I will be a strong and fair leader who will protect our communities and bring people together.”

“As a fellow first responder, I have no doubt that Anthony Cureton has the experience and dedication necessary to ensure Bergen County remains a safe, secure and welcoming place to raise a family,” said Tedesco. “Anthony is passionate about helping improve the lives of Bergen County residents and I’m looking forward to a great partnership.”

“Anthony Cureton is going to be a Sheriff who the people of Bergen County can rely on and trust to get the job done,” said Stellato. “In his career in law enforcement and through his tireless community service, he’s proven to be the type of leader who can bring communities together, solve problems and most importantly keep Bergen County families safe and secure. He’s going to be a great asset and partner for our team in County government.”

Cureton retired as a Detective/Sergeant with the City of Englewood Police after a distinguished 25-year career with the department. He currently serves as the Director of Inmate Social Services/Education for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.

Well known as a civic leader, Cureton is president of the Bergen County Branch of the NAACP and has earned numerous honors for his service to the community, including the 2012 NAACP New Jersey State Conference Outstanding President of the Year Award and the American Conference on Diversity’s 2006 Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Cureton also teaches as Adjunct Professor at Ramapo College and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a guest lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Cureton has earned endorsements from top Democratic leaders and elected officials, including Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, Congressmen Bill Pascrell, Jr. and Josh Gottheimer, and County Executive Jim Tedesco.

If elected in November, Cureton would become the first African-American Sheriff in the history of Bergen County.
