(Trenton) – Today, John Currie, the Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee (NJDSC), announced the appointment of Liz Gilbert as the party organization’s executive director.

Gilbert replaces Chris James, who departs after four years on the job for a position within the Murphy-Oliver administration.

“I am excited that a dynamic young woman like Liz Gilbert will be managing our operations at such a pivotal time. She has a rare combination of determination, vigor, and poise. It is clear why she earned the trust and respect of the Murphy family, and I am particularly impressed by her work ethic,” said Currie, referring to Gilbert’s tremendous job and successful oversight of this year’s inaugural celebration. “She’s smart and seasoned, and she maintains an aggressive pace, which is exactly what we need as we seek to re-elect our senior U.S. Senator, Bob Menendez, and make critical gains this midterm election cycle.”

Gilbert, who was among the inner circle of advisors on the Murphy-Oliver campaign, served as the campaign’s national finance director and surrogate director. Her resume reflects an impressive list of high-profile and tough election contests, both state and federal, including the Obama for America re-election campaign, and a gubernatorial election in the vast state of Texas.

Gilbert also worked for the Democratic National Committee on several occasions, and her varied campaign experiences suggest that she is adaptable and multi-faceted, having held responsibilities ranging from field organizing to fundraising. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“I am honored to have this opportunity and to support Governor Murphy and Lieutenant Governor Oliver as they set to work creating a stronger, fairer New Jersey. I believe their success depends on a strong and united party organization, and I am eager to continue working with county party chairs, elected officials and the impassioned set of advocates I’ve met across the state,” said Gilbert. “I am confident that, together, we will build a stronger party — one that can withstand Donald Trump’s hateful Republican agenda and defeat those who support it.”

Today’s announcement was bittersweet, as the elevation of Gilbert also marks the departure of Chris James. “Chris has been a key player on my team for the vast majority of my tenure as Chairman,” Currie noted. “The executive director position is a demanding one. Most people burn out in under two years, but Chris served four, establishing an unmistakable record of success for Democrats up and down the ballot, and across the state. I am confident that he will continue to make me proud.”

James will be returning to the service of Sheila Oliver, for whom he worked as Chief of Staff in the State Assembly, in her new roles as Lieutenant Governor and at the helm of the state Department of Community Affairs.
