CWA ENDORSES GOV MURPHY FOR RE-ELECTION

Murphy’s Succeeded For NJ & Kept His Word To Working Families

(TRENTON, NEW JERSEY) – The Communications Workers of America (CWA) enthusiastically and unanimously endorses Governor Phil Murphy and Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver for re-election.

“I’ve negotiated with CEOs and Governors for more than forty years,” said Dennis Trainor, CWA’s Vice President of  District 1 – representing over 140,000 CWA members employed in New Jersey, New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut,. “As a CEO and as a boss, Phil Murphy is good, fair and works with us. And as a governor, Phil Murphy is great.  He’s kept his word. And he’s accomplished more for working people in New Jersey in three years than anyone else in the country.  CWA enthusiastically endorses Governor Murphy, and we’re going to work like heck to make sure he’s re-elected.”

“From day one, CWA has been at the forefront of our fight to make New Jersey a place where the middle-class and working families can take greater comfort in knowing their hard work will be fairly rewarded with livable wages and strong workplace protections,” said Governor Murphy.”As we have proven time-and-again, when we work together to restore respect to the collective bargaining process and ensure labor has a seat at the table, we can make great strides toward the New Jersey we know we can be, and that we should be. I’m honored to have CWA’s continued support as we advance our progressive agenda for a stronger, fairer, and more resilient economy that works for every New Jersey family.”

Four years ago, CWA endorsed Murphy because the Union correctly believed Murphy would be steadfastly committed to making the state’s political and economic systems once again responsive to the needs of middle-class and working families. Murphy not only consistently speaks proudly and boldly of a pro-working families and progressive vision…he’s also delivered with action and accomplishments.

Governor Murphy kept his promises on issues of paramount importance to CWA and New Jersey’s working families:

1)   Murphy fulfilled his promise to make the required pension payment – which no governor in either party has done in a quarter-century.

2)   Murphy lived up to his pledge to fairly negotiate contracts that addressed the cost of healthcare.

3)   Murphy made good on his word to protect good union jobs in New Jersey.

Conversely, Governor Murphy’s presumptive opponent in the general election is on the record, less than a year ago, calling for the state to skip its pension payment. This is an outright betrayal of New Jersey’s working families. Moreover, skipping payments would actually cost more in the long run – because that money, when not paid, costs over 7% interest a year and grows exponentially.

“During the most challenging times in recent history, Governor Murphy has continued to protect the public health, workers’ rights and job security, while still standing up for economic policies that build the middle class,” said CWA NJ State Director Hetty Rosenstein. “It’s been a breath of fresh air – especially following eight years of Chris Christie’s 11 credit downgrades, anti-worker tirades, cozying up to Trump and skipping pension payments. We are proud to support four more years of Governor Murphy’s leadership here in New Jersey.”

CWA represents more than 70,000 working men and women in The Garden State – including 40,000 state workers, 15,000 county and municipal workers, and thousands of workers in the telecommunications, airlines, healthcare and direct care industries – as well as thousands of retired members who are registered to vote and who reside in all 21 counties in the State of New Jersey.
