DeFusco Announces Plan for Hoboken Terminal Market

Innovative Proposal Will Help Attract Vibrant New Businesses; Based on Successful Adaptive Re-Use Concepts in NYC, Philadelphia, Atlanta.

Hoboken, NJ – Mayoral candidate and Councilman Mike DeFusco is continuing the roll out of his #NewEnergyNewIdeas platform with a plan to create a Hoboken Terminal Market, utilizing the historic building’s 100,000 square feet of potential retail space to bring a truly unique consumer experience to the Mile Square City. Hoboken Terminal currently attracts approximately 60,000 daily commuters, creating a built-in customer base for what DeFusco hopes will be a diverse array of kiosks and stands featuring everything from gourmet food and drink concepts to mom and pop retail stores and creative arts sellers. The Hoboken Terminal Market will allow new small businesses to take root by greatly reducing financial and regulatory barriers to entry and creating new jobs and city tax revenue, while also fulfilling DeFusco’s vision of a more vibrant city. The concept is based on the success of destinations such as Chelsea Market in Manhattan, Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia and Ponce City Market in Atlanta.

Team DeFusco is releasing the following video with more details on the Hoboken Terminal Market Plan: https://www.mikedefusco.com/terminal-market

“Makers, creators and other innovative small businesses are the lifeblood of a vibrant city, but in Hoboken the high costs of operating are truly stifling and make it difficult to impossible for many types of businesses to function,” said DeFusco. “Our Hoboken Terminal Market plan would create a place for these business to thrive by repurposing underutilized areas in the terminal in a way that supports our overall vision for a community of creators that nurtures a diverse set of new businesses.”

The Hoboken Terminal Market plan would build off of the existing redevelopment plan for the rail yard redevelopment project as well as a commitment that DeFusco has secured between the city and the terminal’s designated redeveloper to bring an outdoor French Market experience to Warrington Plaza, a currently fenced-off area outside the terminal. DeFusco began advocating for the Warrington Plaza Market shortly after his election to the Council, eventually securing an agreement to tentatively open the new market in 2018.

“The excitement generated by our Warrington Market plan and the fact that we were able to get all stakeholders to buy in to the concept shows the value that a new perspective can bring to city government,” said DeFusco. “This concept will support small businesses and add a new community amenity with little to no cost to taxpayers. This is exactly the kind of approach I will bring to Hoboken as Mayor, and the Hoboken Terminal Market is the natural next step.”
