DePhillips bill prohibits governor from hiring state-contracted businesses to conduct investigations of governor and office

TRENTON, N.J. – Firms with ties to the governor or the state would be prohibited from being hired by the governor to investigate any allegations brought against the governor and administration under a bill introduced today by Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips.

“This is a simple, good government bill that we can all agree on,” said DePhillips (R-Bergen).  “It prevents conflicts of interest or the appearances of conflicts by keeping investigations free of undue influence resulting from contractual agreements or political contributions.”

The bill (A4917) prohibits businesses with state contracts, or that made campaign contributions to the governor, from conducting an investigation into any matter involving the governor or his office.

“This legislation is needed to ensure the integrity of investigations by removing any taint that would be associated with the recommendations of the investigator,” concluded  DePhillips.
