Diegnan Bill to Permit the Sale of Alcohol in Small Theaters Now Law

Trenton – Legislation sponsored by Senator Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr, which would allow small theaters to sell alcoholic beverages, was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy.

“There are countless small theaters throughout our state that keep the spirit of the arts alive and well in our communities, said Senator Patrick Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “Permitting the sale of alcohol at these small theaters will increase their in-house attendance by attracting people to enjoy a night out on the town with a drink and a show. This will also generate more foot traffic into many downtown areas, increasing revenues for local businesses throughout our state.”

The law will allow the sale of alcoholic beverages on the theater premises for two hours immediately preceding performances, during performances and intermission.

The law reduces the number of seats a theater is required to have from 1,000 seats to 50 in order for a nonprofit corporation to apply for a retail license to serve alcoholic beverages on the theater premises.
