Diegnan, Ruiz Resolution to Urge Congress to Enact Reforms to Address Sexual Assault in the Military Clears Committee

TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senator Patrick Diegnan, Jr. and Senator M. Teresa Ruiz urging Congress to enact reforms addressing sexual harassment and assault in the armed forces cleared the Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today.

“Our military must do a better job addressing sexual assault and harassment,” said Senator Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “These men and women put their lives on the line to defend our freedom and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect when seeking justice.”

The concurrent resolution, SCR-120, would urge the United States Congress to enact various reforms currently pending to address sexual harassment and assault in the United States Armed Forces. The reforms include improving the services for victims of sexual harassment and assault, extending their rights, and modifying the way cases are handled and data is collected.

“The report issued by the Department of Defense on sexual assault in the military found that just six percent of survivors reported their assault,” said Senator Ruiz (D-Essex). “By improving the way cases are handled, we can create an environment where more people feel comfortable coming forward, which makes it a safer environment for everyone.”

The bill was released from committee by a vote of 4-0, and next heads to the full Senate for further consideration.
