Doherty to Governor: Open Police, Fire Academies

Senator Michael Doherty called on Governor Murphy to open police and fire academies across the state.

“Even in a state under strict lockdown during a pandemic, there is a constant need for qualified police officers and firefighters,” said Doherty (R-23). “When the academies were shut down due to the coronavirus, it blocked the dreams of hundreds of young men and women who are committed to protecting and helping state residents. It’s time to allow instructors to go back to work preparing and training a new generation of New Jersey heroes.”

“These facilities must not be forgotten in your plans to unlock the doors and bring the state back to some semblance of normalcy,” Doherty wrote in a letter to the Governor.

The Senator noted the academies, like the state economy, have been dormant for more than two months.

“Cadets and trainees, many who are on the brink of certification and graduation, have made significant sacrifices to pursue public service,” said Doherty. “Upon graduation, they will answer the alarm to protect neighborhoods and property, and save lives.

“The administrations and staff members of the academies have crafted safe and responsible plans to reopen,” Doherty said. “They are waiting on your ‘green light.’”
