Donors Vote with their Wallets Following Upset Win in Democratic Primary
Cape May, New Jersey – July 1, 2024 – The upcoming FEC filing will show that Joe Salerno’s campaign for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District seat raised over $200 thousand in less than 20 days since Salerno was named the Democratic nominee, bringing the campaign to over $1 million raised to date. This is nearly double what the last Democratic NJ-02 candidate was able to collect over an entire campaign in 2022. It’s another sign of the growing interest and support building behind Salerno’s candidacy. With several months until the election in November, it looks like Salerno is giving Van Drew a run for his money in every sense of the phrase.
This quarterly report exceeds what experts were predicting for this quarter. The hard-fought primary required extra time to confirm Salerno’s victory, and potential donors usually sit things out during an extended certification process. Yet, while the campaign did acknowledge lower activity for a few days, the bounceback was quick and enthusiastic.
“It’s heartening to see,” said Salerno. “My opponent didn’t have to tap into his incumbent war chest because he had an uncontested primary. So we still have a lot of road to make up. But it’s gratifying that more and more people are standing behind me with their votes, their hearts, and their financial support.” Van Drew spent over $3 million in the 2022 campaign, and he’s likely to exceed that in 2024. “He probably needs a lot more,” according to Salerno. “Lower quality products tend to spend more on marketing.”
