Downey Introduces Legislation to Establish a Home Repair and Modification for Aging Parents Program

(TRENTON) – To ensure the 1.1 million home caregivers in New Jersey are receiving the benefits and assistance they need to provide for their loved ones, Assemblywoman Joann Downey (D-Monmouth) introduced a measure that would establish a home repair assistance program for homeowners to accommodate their aging parents.

“As Chair of the Assembly Human Services Committee, I believe this bill is essential in ensuring that homes are properly modified and equipped to provide senior family members with a dignified living space and the resources they need to thrive,” said Downey.

The bill (A-5648) would establish a Home Repair and Modification for Aging Parents Program, and would appropriate $5 million to assist homeowners across the State in making modifications to their homes to help their aging parent feel more comfortable living in the caregiver’s primary residence. Eligible repairs to a home would include alterations to facilitate the safe movement of an aging parent, as well as major structural alterations to increase the amount of space inside a homeowner’s home.

“The pandemic has caused many seniors in need of care to reside with loved ones instead of living in long-term care facilities,” said Downey.  “Now more than ever, it is important for us to empower caregivers with the resources they need to provide a comfortable living environment for their aging relatives.”

The bill has been referred to the Assembly Human Services Committee.
