Environmental Justice Leaders Plan to Call on Gov Murphy to Stop Newark Power Plant

Newark residents and activists will hold a demonstration to greet Governor Murphy at the Union County Commissioners swearing-in ceremony today, calling on him to live up to his environmental justice commitments and stop the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s proposal to build a new dirty energy power plant at their processing facility in Newark’s Ironbound Community.

For months, Newark residents, environmental justice leaders, and allies from across the state have campaigned to stop a Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) plan to build a new fracked gas power plant in Newark’s Ironbound Community.  PVSC has ignored community concerns and continues to push forward with the gas plant despite their commitments to listen to community feedback and sincerely explore renewable energy alternatives. Late last month, PVSC announced they plan to vote on the project at their Commission meeting next Thursday, January 13th at noon.
