14 Measures Aiming to Combat Hunger in Homes and on College Campuses

 

Among the Bills –“Food Desert Elimination Act,” Hunger- Free Campus Act, Establishing an Anti-Hunger Link for Food Donations, & Encourage Gleaning Activities on NJ Farms

 

(TRENTON) – Fourteen separate measures focused on fighting the problem of hunger in New Jersey communities highlight Thursday’s Assembly Human Services Committee.

The committee will begin at 1:00 pm in Committee Room 16, located on the 4th floor of the State House Annex in Trenton.

“Food Desert Elimination Act”; provides incentives to supermarkets and grocery stores that locate in “food deserts.”

Requires DHS to establish electronic portal to promote surplus food donation collaboration among nonprofit organizations, gleaners, and food retailers.

“Hunger-Free Campus Act”; requires Secretary of Higher Education to establish grant program to address food insecurity among students enrolled in public institutions of higher education; appropriates $1 million.

Requires Chief Technology Officer to establish “Anti-Hunger Link” for all State websites, providing information on emergency food services.
