First Female and Hispanic Municipal Court Judge in Elizabeth, NJ

ELIZABETH, NJ, February 2, 2020– Mayor J. Christian Bollwage recently appointed Juliana
Diaz, Esq., to serve as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Elizabeth. The appointment was
confirmed by the vote of the City Council on January 14th. Juliana Diaz will be the first female
and the first Latino judge in the city’s history.

Diaz will be sworn in on Wednesday, February 5th at 4:30 p.m. at the Union County Superior
Courthouse, located in Elizabeth, NJ by the Honorable Candido Rodriguez, Jr.

“I am honored and humbled by this appointment,” said Ms. Diaz. “Throughout my career as an
attorney I have had taken pride in serving the Spanish-speaking community and representing
those in need. I look forward to representing both the female population and Latino community
as a Municipal Court Judge.”

Attorney Diaz has been a practicing attorney since 2008. Throughout her career, she has always
focused on public interest and representing a majority Spanish-speaking community in real
estate, immigration and family law in Elizabeth. In 2019, she was the legal advisor for the
Colombian Consulate in Newark, NJ. Diaz began her legal career as a legal services attorney in
Newark, NJ representing low-income tenants facing eviction matters. Beyond practicing law,
Attorney Diaz has spent time serving the Latino community in various needs such as shelter,
health, and overall outreach interactions.

Ms. Diaz obtained her law degree at Rutgers School of Law in Camden, NJ where she cofounded
an immigration clinic and participated in creating a legal program for children in need
of Social Security Disability representation. She studied at The George Washington University
where she received her bachelor’s degree in international affairs and communications.
She looks forward to serving the community of Elizabeth with the highest level of respect,
professionalism and care, both in and out of the Courtroom.
