Freeholder Director and Curbing Hunger, Inc. President Ask Residents to Help the Food-Unstable Put Food on Their Table

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Recently, Somerset County Freeholder Director Shanel Y. Robinson, Curbing Hunger, Inc. President Chuck Knill, and Curbing Hunger, Inc. Board Member and Director at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Basking Ridge Father Rick Morley speak in a video produced about the importance of supporting Curbing Hunger, Inc. during the pandemic. The three community leaders encourage everyone in Somerset County to donate as much as possible during Curbing Hunger Month to help offset the terrible financial impact that COVID has had on so many families.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, statistics show that approximately 25,000 of our residents have either lost their jobs or have been furloughed,” said Freeholder Director Robinson. “This means that many of our friends, and maybe even your neighbor down the street may be struggling to make ends meet this year.”

In the past, Curbing Hunger Month has occurred in June when foodbank supplies are low. This year,  however, the summer food drive was delayed because of the pandemic and is now being held in October, but donations are being accepted throughout the year. How to Donate

Residents can place canned food and non-perishable goods in the orange plastic Curbing Hunger bags which will be tied to the handle of their recycling bins, or they can use any plastic bag and mark it “food.” Donations will be distributed to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County and other county food pantries.  For more information about how to donate, visit http://bit.ly/CurbingHungerVideo2020

Bags of donations should be left at the curb with residents’ usual recycling items to be picked up on their regularly scheduled recycling days.

The food drive also accepts monetary donations. Checks should be made payable to Curbing Hunger, Inc., and mailed to 140 South Maple Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. Amp Your Good, Inc. has also made it possible for people to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables online at www.curbinghunger2020.org. Online donations will be delivered directly to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

Food and Non-Perishable Items

Perishable food and food in glass containers will NOT be accepted. Items that will be accepted are Parmalat milk, canned meat, fish, meals-in-a-can such as pasta, stews and meaty soups, canned tomato sauce, canned fruits, peanut butter and jelly in plastic jars.

Non-perishable high-demand items include laundry detergent, household cleaning supplies, dish detergent/soap, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, body wash/soap, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste/toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, baby food diapers (all sizes) and

baby formula. Curbing Hunger, Inc. appreciates all donations.

Curbing Hunger, Inc. is a non-profit community-based program that helps support food banks, pantries, and other entities by collecting food for the hungry during times of the year when food bank supplies are the lowest. This year Curbing Hunger, Inc. is going green by providing residents with biodegradable Curbing Hunger bags.

The Food Bank Network is a non-profit organization that distributes food and other items to local food pantries located in Somerville, Bound Brook, North Plainfield, and Bridgewater to help the less fortunate Somerset County residents.
