Freiman Appointed Chair of Assembly Agriculture & Food Security Committee

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D- Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon) has been appointed by Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to take the helm of the Assembly Agriculture and Food Security Committee for the 220th Legislative session.

“Pairing the fight against food insecurity with the efforts to grow and sustain the agriculture industry will be pivotal in our aim to ensure no New Jersey resident goes hungry,” said Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex).  “I am confident Freiman will lead the panel in putting forth legislation that will help to reduce food waste and expand resources for New Jersey farmers and businesses.”

Freiman will lead the committee on issues related to the State’s diverse agriculture and agribusiness industries. The panel will also consider legislation aiming to stem food insecurity in New Jersey communities.

“The Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Coughlin, has introduced and passed several bills to address food insecurity in New Jersey, where 1 in 9 children are going hungry each day,” said Freiman. “As we move through the pandemic and work to counter its impact on our economy, it is crucial we look at how we can best support the agricultural industry in the State, and bring its needs and concerns to the forefront for discussion. We will work with fellow committee members, from both sides of the aisle, and all stakeholders to develop and pass progressive legislation beneficial to New Jersey residents and businesses.”

Freiman has served his District 16 constituents since 2017. In this session, he will also serve on the Assembly Financial Institutions and the Assembly Commerce Committees.
