Gerald Reiner Questions How the Teaneck Board of Education Will Sustain Grant Funded Programs

The Teaneck Public Schools have announced that they have received a $1.2 million dollar grant toward expanding Pre-K services in the district. However what their press release omits is that this funding is only for half of the school year and has no guaranteed in being renewed in the future budget years. This means the district must budget at minimum another $2.4 million dollars for the 2019-2020 school year or roughly 2.4% of their entire budget, a number over the state mandated cap limit. Gerald T Reiner Jr., candidate for board of education asks “What will be cut in order to pay for these expanded services?” he continued by stating “This is the double edged sword of grants, the money runs out and the district needs to pick up the tab. Today many of our schools do not have air conditioning, and I have heard from parents that some of our books are out of date and falling apart. Finally, our Teachers are not being given the full resources they need in the class room, asking maybe the district could spend $2.4 million dollars on what we already have rather than on expanding services.”
