Gill Calls on Rutgers to Name Building After Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Trenton – Aiming to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Senate Higher Education Committee advanced a resolution today sponsored by Senator Nia Gill urging Rutgers University to dedicate a building to the trailblazing lawyer who spent nine years teaching at Rutgers Law School. Senator Gill issued the following statement on the resolution:

“In her 25 plus years on the court, Justice Ginsburg shaped public opinion as she worked tirelessly to ensure that the rule of law met the highest aspirations of this nation, and upheld the promises outlined in the constitution. Her fight and legacy have inspired generations of women, members of the legal profession, and Americans all across this country, and has left an indelible footprint for future generations to follow.

“Her fight for gender equality and pay equity began in New Jersey when she joined the academic faculty at Rutgers University in 1963 when she discovered women were being paid less than their male counterparts. Justice Ginsburg spearheaded and won an equal pay campaign to ensure pay parity for her and the other women faculty.

“Winning several cases, these decisions established the principle of equal treatment under the law for women as well as men and overturned numerous laws that treated men and women differently based on outdated gender stereotypes. Her achievements as a lawyer made her, as many have said, the Thurgood Marshall of the women’s rights movement.

“Justice Ginsburg paved the way to help ensure that a woman is defined and recognized by the value of her person, abilities, and power. It is befitting Rutgers University name a building after Justice Ginsberg as her memory serves as a revolution that will inspire many generations to come.”
