Gilman, Parlamas and Clayton: The Mental Health of our Students and Staff are Paramount

For Immediate Release: October 13, 2021

Ocean Township, Monmouth County This week marked World Mental Health Day. We have all been through very challenging times these past 18 months, and the Ocean Schools are no exception. The mental health of our students and staff is a top priority, and our schools must continue to offer comprehensive services to help. The Experience Matters team of Irene Gilman, Denise Parlamas, and Steve Clayton think that proactive mental health services have to remain a top priority for our school district.

In addition to a team of Student Assistance Counselors (two of whom were hired recently in the summer to provide year-round support) and other mental health professionals, the Ocean Schools provides extensive resources to students and staff alike. The Ocean Schools has invested in the mental health of its students and staff by creating a district-wide Wellness Committee, have Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) integrated in the learning where appropriate, and was awarded a grant by Rutgers for virtual trainings for parents on trauma and professional development for staff members. We come from different perspectives and backgrounds, but we are all part of the Spartan family, and we look out for each other.

As the late, great actor Robin Williams said, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind, always.” Treat others with the same respect that you want others to treat you.

One of the things that make Ocean such a special community is we look out for each other in good times and bad. If you need help, please always reach out to someone. Check-in with your neighbor and the person sitting next to you in school. It is the Spartan way.
