Gina Trish Statement on passing of Sheila Oliver

Sheila Oliver was the first woman in politics to ever show me kindness or give me a chance. When I reached out to her, she picked up the phone. She was incredibly generous with her time and always had sage advice to give, but more remarkably, she listened. She valued everyone’s thoughts, even if she didn’t agree with them.

I had the privilege of working with Sheila, or LG as we fondly called her, for over four years and even through the pandemic stresses, behind masks and screens, she always maintained respect, politeness, and a sense of humor.

Whether we were discussing housing inequities or sharing gardening tips with each other, I treasured our conversations. She would often say that politics is not for the faint of heart, that women have to maintain an “alligator hide” to survive. I will forever be grateful for the mentorship and kindness she showed me, even in the most difficult of times.

She was indeed a trailblazer as a legislator and Lt. Governor in every sense of the word, from her fierce advocacy for women’s equality, social justice, children, and underserved communities. She was a dedicated public servant who sponsored legislation in 2006 establishing the New Jersey Department of Children and Families.

She signed dozens of bills as Acting Governor, including bills that strengthened equal pay for equal work by preventing employers from asking employees’ previous salary history, and protecting employees from wage theft. In tandem with her public service, she was a good human being who genuinely cared about helping others.

Sending my deepest condolences to her Mom, Jenny, and members of her family at this difficult time. This is not only a tremendous loss for the State of New Jersey, but for humanity. She was a bright light in New Jersey politics, especially for women. Thank you Sheila for your service and your friendship. I will miss you always. Rest in power.
