Gopal Withstands Overwhelming Republican Red Wave and Emerges Victorious in Monmouth County

OCEAN — Democratic State Senator Vin Gopal has emerged victorious in his bid to secure re-election as the State Senator representing New Jersey’s 11th district, with all precincts now reporting and Gopal’s lead standing at over 2,000 votes.

“I am deeply thankful to the voters across the 11th Legislative District for entrusting in me the duty to serve them for another term in the State Senate,” said Gopal. “As Senator, I will continue to fight for our Monmouth County communities’ shared priorities, including real property tax relief through municipal consolidation, increased funding for our schools, access to quality healthcare, protecting our beach environment and economy, and as we’ve said all along in this campaign, fighting to give our mom and pop small businesses the resources they need to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“Perhaps most importantly, I will continue to be a strong advocate for a return to civility in our politics. We will never be able to address our district, county, and state’s most pressing needs through smear campaigns or polarizing national partisan political shouting. In Monmouth County and across New Jersey, residents look to their public officials to maintain our community’s simple promise: that if you work hard and do the right thing, you’ll get ahead.”

“Senator Gopal’s victory is a testament to his unique ability to accomplish a rare feat in our politics today, which is bringing leaders together from both sides of the aisle to deliver for working families,” said Campaign Manager Coby Eiss. “The 2021 elections across the state proved to be a red wave, and our district falls within Monmouth County, where Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli enjoyed nearly a 20-point advantage. Senator Gopal’s significant win came even as many tremendous public officials across the county and throughout the state lost their seats in the Republican red wave on Election Night.”

Over 1,000 mail-in and provisional votes remain to be counted by Monmouth County election officials, and Gopal’s running mates Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey are in a “too-close-to-call” race.

Senator Vin Gopal serves as Democratic Majority Conference Leader and Chairman of the Senate’s Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
