Gottheimer Holocaust Remembrance Amendment Signed into Law by President

Holocaust Victims to be included in Historic WWII Commemoration

WASHINGTON – On January 30, 2019, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) announced that his amendment to remember the victims of the Holocaust on the 75th anniversary of World War II has been signed into law.

This language, first introduced by Congressman Josh Gottheimer as an amendment to the FY 19 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and cosponsored by Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) and Brad Schneider (IL-10), was included in S. 3661, the “75th Anniversary of World War II Commemoration Act,” which the President signed into law on January 10th. The Act establishes a commemorative program to honor veterans, educate the public about the history of World War II, highlight the service of the men and women who served our nation on the home front during the war, recognize the contribution of our allies, and remember the horrors of the Holocaust.

“I am proud and humbled that the 75th anniversary commemoration of World War II will include a fitting tribute to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. Given the rise of anti-Semitism here at home and around the world, as well as new evidence that knowledge about the Holocaust is beginning to fade, it is more important than ever for our government to commemorate the Holocaust and educate citizens about its history. I appreciate my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for supporting my amendment and for their commitment to honor the memory of Holocaust victims.
