Trenton, NJ – Governor Christie today followed through on his promise to reimburse state employees impacted by the government closure last month, by signing S3422/A18 (Sweeney, Greenstein, Bateman/Muoio, Giblin, Mazzeo, Gusciora, Benson, DeAngelo, Vainieri Huttle, Zwicker, Barclay, Jones).

The legislation amends the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget to ensure involuntarily furloughed state employees receive retroactive salary payments for the government closure that occurred from July 1 through 3 as the Legislature worked to deliver a new state budget to the Governor.

“This bill justly reinstates the pay lost by our hard-working rank and file state workers who were not at fault for the three-day government closure that disrupted services and inconvenienced our citizens when the adoption of a Fiscal 2018 budget stalled in the Legislature,” Governor Christie said. “I thank Senate President Sweeney and Speaker Prieto for acting on this legislation to reimburse our dedicated state workers.”

The Senate voted on July 13 to approve the bill, which the Assembly adopted yesterday. The measure, which takes effect immediately, will enable the Department of Treasury to begin acting on the reimbursements as quickly as possible.
