Governor Murphy Absolute Vetoes Senate Bill No. 2662

TRENTON
– Today, Governor Phil Murphy absolute vetoed the following legislation:

S-2662/A-4113 (Sweeney, Bateman/Burzichelli)
 – Limits liability for persons who deliver heating oil to unregulated tanks for discharges from that tank under certain circumstances.

“My administration has carefully reviewed this legislation and we have determined that this bill would be detrimental to the people of New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy. “The bill poses threats to our environment and taints the environmental legacy Governor Byrne fought for.”

“My husband, Brendan Byrne, believed deeply in protecting New Jersey from environmental degradation and harmful contaminants in part through his enactment of the landmark Spill Act,” said Ruthi Byrne, Governor Byrne’s wife. “I applaud Governor Murphy for standing up for this legacy by vetoing S2662, which, if enacted, would jeopardize the environmental progress Brendan so fiercely championed.”
