Governor Murphy Issues Writ for Special Election to Fill the Seat of U.S. Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr.

TRENTON – Governor Phil Murphy issued a writ of election to fill the vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District created by the passing of Representative Donald M. Payne Jr. on April 24, 2024. The Governor’s decision to issue a writ of election for the unexpired portion of the term ending on January 3, 2025 is required by N.J.S.A. 19:3-27 and N.J.S.A. 19:27-4.

Consistent with N.J.S.A. 19:27-6, the Governor’s writ directs that a special primary election will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, with a special general election to be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. The writ also states that nomination petitions for candidates seeking a party nomination shall be filed by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024. Direct nominations by petition for independent candidates shall be filed no later than the day of the special primary election. The writ of election directs the Secretary of State to promptly adopt any guidelines necessary to effectuate the writ.
