Governor Murphy Will Host a Telephone Town Hall to Discuss Historic $15 Minimum Wage Law

TRENTON, N.J. — Governor Phil Murphy will host a Telephone Town Hall on Wednesday evening to discuss the landmark legislation to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage to $15 per hour. Governor Murphy was joined by Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, wage advocates and union representatives in Elizabeth on Monday to sign the the $15 minimum wage bill into law.

“We made history yesterday by putting New Jersey on a responsible path to raise the minimum wage because working families should not have to choose between feeding their children or paying their rent,” said Governor Murphy. “This is a monumental victory for our state and it is important everyone has the opportunity to discuss the economic benefits of providing workers with a fair and livable wage.”

The minimum wage in New Jersey will rise from $8.85 an hour to $10 an hour beginning July 1, 2019 and then rising an additional $1 an hour each year on January 1 until 2024. Roughly 1.2 million works will see an immediate benefit from the wage increase and will earn an estimated $1,200 more in the last six months of 2019 alone. Young people working their way through college will have a degree closer in reach and millions of residents will now have access to economic power to help grow the economy.
