Great Swamp Watershed Association to Honor Former New Jersey Governor and EPA Administrator, Christine Todd Whitman at Annual Gala & Silent Auction – October 12

Morristown, NJ—The Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) announced today that it will host its 36th Annual Gala & Silent Auction at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, NJ on October 12, 2017.  With over 400 community leaders, elected officials, and top New Jersey environmental activists expected to attend, the event traditionally represents the year’s largest gathering of advocates and boosters supporting the protection of water and land in New Jersey’s Great Swamp and Passaic River region.  The Great Swamp Watershed Association also announced that Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey, and administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, will be honored for her decades of leadership and stewardship of the environment.

“We are pleased to honor Christine Todd Whitman for her invaluable environmental contributions to the state of New Jersey over the past 30-plus years,” stated Sally Rubin, GSWA Executive Director. “It is imperative that we continue to have dedicated people, such as former Governor Whitman, as partners in protecting and preserving our natural resources, who share in our resolute commitment to finding long-term solutions.”

Christine Whitman is currently the President of The Whitman Strategy Group (WSG), a consulting firm that specializes in energy and environmental issues. Among the many major accomplishments she achieved, Former Governor Whitman made a commitment to preserving a record amount of New Jersey lands as permanent green space.

“As a provider of water and wastewater services to our community, New Jersey American Water is committed to protecting the environment and our precious resources. It is our pleasure to partner with the Great Swamp Watershed Association, supporting them in their efforts to continue their stewardship of New Jersey’s land, water, and environment,” stated Thomas Shroba, Sr. Director, Field Operations at New Jersey America Water.

This year’s Gala announcement comes on the heels of a flurry of recent activity from GSWA, which earlier this month announced that it has received the prestigious National Land Trust accreditation, and last year expanded its mission to advocate on behalf of the entire Passaic River and became the formal river affiliate to the nationally based Waterkeeper Alliance.  As an environmental leader in New Jersey, GSWA has developed and implemented a series of initiatives to serve New Jersey as the premiere land conservation and advocate in the Passaic River region, providing environmental education to community groups, teachers, and students, serving as a needed advocate and defender of New Jersey’s precious natural resources, and promoting an understanding of the importance of protecting our drinking water and preserving the natural beauty of our environment.

Those interested in learning more about the Gala or purchasing tickets may visit GreatSwamp.org or call (973) 538-3500.

To participate in the Gala’s silent auction, an auction catalogue including instructions for mobile text bidding will be made available at GreatSwamp.org beginning on October 2.  The silent auction will close at 9:00 p.m. on October 12.

Proceeds from all underwriting, ticket sales and auction purchases will go to support the environmental stewardship, education and advocacy programs of the Great Swamp Watershed Association.
