Green Party Statement of Solidarity with the Venezuelan People
U.S. Hands off Venezuela

The Green Party of New Jersey opposes the ongoing effort by the U.S. to appropriate the resources of Venezuela as their own and believes in the right of Venezuelans to determine their own leadership without outside the intervention of outside imperialistic forces. GPNJ is particularly concerned that these efforts not end in war with Venezuela which would be disastrous.

“The U.S. Congress must call for the U.S. to rescind its designation of Guaido as the President of Venezuela and must also stop asking for the world to choose sides. This maneuver is illegal and denies the Venezuelan people the right to determine their own futures, “ said Denise Brush, chair of the Green Party of New Jersey’s Membership Committee. “Only the people of Venezuela have the legal right to determine their leadership. In addition, we call on our Senators and members of our Congressional delegation to introduce a resolution to cut off all U.S. support for the coup.”

“This is one of the most blatantly manipulative coup attempts we’ve ever seen,” said Madelyn Hoffman, member of the Green Party of New Jersey. “Juan Guiado boycotted the recent Presidential elections, i.e. he did not run — and yet the U.S. has anointed him the legitimate leader of the Venezuelan people. This is despite overwhelming and continuing support the Bolivarian Revolution. Not only has the U.S. attempted to select a new leader for a sovereign country whose elections were carefully monitored and showed no irregularities, but the U.S. is also attempting to redirect money from the legitimately elected leader to someone the U.S. has selected.”

The U.S. has been trying to overthrow the legitimate government of Venezuela since 2002 — when a coup attempt against Hugo Chavez was thwarted by an informed Venezuelan public who understood that the coup attempt was illegal and flooded the Presidential Palace in opposition. The U.S. covets Venezuela’s vast oil resources and opposes its nationalization because that allows the Venezuelans to profit from their greatest natural resource.

The Green Party of New Jersey opposes the ongoing effort by the U.S. to appropriate the resources of Venezuela as their own and believes in the right of Venezuelans to determine their own leadership without outside the intervention of outside imperialistic forces. The Green Party of New Jersey is also particularly concerned about the role Colombia could play, as the first Latin American partner with NATO. For these reasons, the Green Party of New Jersey calls for U.S. hands off of Venezuela, allowing the Venezuelans to decide for themselves what their future will be and preventing yet another war of U.S. aggression and intervention.
