The City of Camden shone on Sunday, September 2, as community leaders came together for several hours and stood as “One Community, One City” in support of local control of the Camden public schools.
Several Leaders and Organizations came together at Farnham Park across the street from the recently demolished 92-year old Camden High School with music, school supplies, book bags, food, giveaways and many community connections as the students prepared to go back to school on September 4, 2018.
Several School Board Members, former and present Council Members, Superintendent of the Camden Schools, NJ Education Association Representatives, all were in attendance.
Green Party United States Senate Candidate Madelyn Hoffman had the opportunity to address the crowd of 400 with the many issues that are affecting the city of Camden and other New Jersey cities in the upcoming November election such as returning schools to local control, a ballot question which will allow Camden residents to elect their school board representatives and discussing the Journey 4 Justice National “Failing Brown vs Board of Education” report on equity or lack thereof in our public schools, 64 years after the Supreme Court ruling. Camden High School was featured in the report.
“The Green Party believes in local democracy and local control of public schools,” said candidate Madelyn Hoffman. “We are committed to working for true equality between public schools in the cities and public schools in the suburbs, the dream of Brown v. Board of Education and Abbott v. Burke. The Green Party also advocates for moving up to 25% of the military budget out of the military and into programs that address community needs like public education and ensuring that the water in the Camden schools is clean enough for drinking.”
Gary Frazier, co-chair of the New Jersey Greens said, “Sunday’s Meet the Greens in Camden in support of the upcoming ballot question for Camden’s right to an elected school board was a phenomenal event. The event featured activists and community based organizations from the city and from all across New Jersey. Felt really good to see the Greens and Camden parents interacting and signing up to learn more about the Green Party. It is amazing what can be done when we all come together!”
Dario Hunter, Green Party member of the Youngstown, Ohio school board also addressed the crowd on Sunday, September 2nd. Dario Hunter drove 6 hours to Camden because he said, “‘Your children are our children and our children are your children.’ We’ve been through something very much what you’re going through here in Camden and if I could give you all just one word of advice it is to fight back. Don’t allow control of your schools to be taken away from you!”
