Gyorfy, Wilson to Serve as Morris Township Mayor, Deputy Mayor in 2022

Fresh off his reelection victory, Gyorfy will serve as the youngest Mayor in the Township’s 200+ year history. Mayor Emeritus Cathy Wilson will return to leadership for a third year

Morris Township Deputy Mayor Mark Gyorfy and Former Mayor and Committeewoman Cathy Wilson announce that they have the support of their colleagues on the Morris Township Committee to serve as mayor and deputy mayor in 2022. In the Township form of government, the mayor and deputy mayor are chosen by the Township Committee for one-year terms.

Deputy Mayor Mark Gyorfy has chaired the Township Committee’s Communications, Legislative, and Transportation standing committees and was recently reelected to his second term earlier this year.

Committeewoman Cathy Wilson led Morris Township as mayor during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. She is noted for implementing video coverage of Township Committee meetings, expanding work on environmental initiatives, and promoting informed citizen engagement on land-use and transportation issues.

“I have worked diligently with my colleagues over the past three years to bring common sense solutions to Morris Township’s biggest challenges,” Gyorfy said. “I am looking forward to working closely with the Township Committee over the next year to continue advancing robust policy proposals to ensure our community isn’t just prepared for the future, but becomes a model for local governance.”

“I’m honored to serve a second term as Morris Township’s deputy mayor,” Wilson said. “Promoting good two-way communication with residents is a cornerstone value for me. I work hard to listen, build trust, and work together in a spirit of collaboration to solve problems, find common ground, and accomplish beneficial results for our community.”

Wilson added, “All of us on the Township Committee look forward to continuing this approach and working together to accomplish the exciting possibilities that lie ahead of us.”

Mark Gyorfy was born and raised in Morris Township and was first elected to the Township Committee in 2018 at age 26.

Gyorfy has driven initiatives with his colleagues to enhance the Township’s constituent communications as well as introduce important legislative measures to address traffic concerns, protect the environment, provide for electric vehicle charging, and strengthen requirements for redevelopment proposals.

Gyorfy is a Morristown High School graduate and studied government and counter terrorism at the University of Maryland. He then worked for U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (NJ-08), advising the congressman on homeland security, veterans’ affairs, and financial services policy.

A volunteer firefighter for over twelve years, Gyorfy continues his service as a lieutenant at Hillside Hose Company No. 1. He currently works in the financial services industry.

Wilson has lived in Morris Township since 2007. She is the mother of two grown children and grandmother to four young boys.

Wilson is a retired educator. Her 30-year career in Illinois and Michigan spanned a wide range of positions including teacher, principal, and central office administrator.

Wilson was first elected to the Township Committee in 2017 and re-elected in 2020. She served as deputy mayor in 2019 and mayor in 2020. Wilson has a longstanding passion for the importance of civics. She is noted for authoring several thought-provoking commentaries on local issues.

Wilson has a BA in English from Washington University in St. Louis, an MA in Special Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, an MA in Educational Leadership from National Louis University in Illinois, and an MS in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from Columbia University in New York City.

Gyorfy added “Cathy and I are honored to serve the community along with our colleagues on the Township Committee and we are always available to work with residents on the issues they care about.”
