Hamilton Township Provides Community with Progress Report Update Following Recent Animal Shelter State Inspection; Invites Residents to ‘Clear the Shelters’ Pet Adoption Event This Saturday

Today, the Hamilton Township Municipal Government provided an update to the community on its progress in addressing the recent Township Animal Shelter state report.

Immediately following the receipt of the report, Mayor Kelly Yaede initiated her administration’s complete and thorough review of the report findings and began to address all cited issues.   Mayor Yaede and her entire administration are fully committed to enhancing our shelter operations and making any necessary improvements.  Hamilton officials acknowledge the issues citied in the State report that need to be addressed, have taken those findings very seriously and are working aggressively to remedy any deficiencies.

Today, Township Director Martin Flynn, acting temporarily in the capacity of Acting Mayor as Mayor Kelly Yaede recovers from a surgical procedure occurring earlier this week, formally announced the measures that the Hamilton Township Animal Shelter has taken, while also expressing Mayor Yaede’s commitment to the shelter and its pets.

“No one is a more passionate advocate for our shelter and our animals than Mayor Yaede,” says Flynn.  “Mayor Yaede fought to double the size of our shelter because greater capacity was needed and has worked tirelessly to help promote animal adoptions.”

A list of measures that the Animal Shelter has already taken or is currently in the process of completing are:   

ü  Plans for a new display for all required inspections in the lobby of our shelter

ü  New storage containers for food items

ü  Working to ensure State approval for a new cleaning and sanitary product system that is currently used in hospitals and schools

ü  New bottles and labels for documenting cleaning substances

ü  New paper towel dispensers

ü  New LED lights

ü  Preparations for painting areas where minor paint peeling has occurred

ü  Repairing some damaged floor tiles

ü  Repairs to portal doors in our cat enclosure area

ü  A new scale for weight larger-breed dogs

ü  Multiple checks to discard any item past its expiration date

ü  Already completed training courses to ensure compliance with certain state regulations

ü  Plans to transition state recommended methods whenever possible

ü  And plans to employ electronic forms to help enhance the accuracy and dependability of logs that track veterinary visits and medication

As the Animal Shelter takes these steps, officials have been in contact with State Department of Health to ensure proper compliance.  Additionally, while completing corrective efforts, the shelter has remained open for regular business, including pet adoptions.

Additionally, officials updated the community on a positive meeting held yesterday with Dr. William Carter, the shelter’s former Supervising Veterinarian, who provided constructive suggestions on how Hamilton can enhance shelter operations.  Dr. Carter also shared his very positive view of the dedicated Hamilton Township Animal Shelter staff.  Also, in conference with the State Department of Health, the shelter is actively seeking an interim veterinarian to serve for the remained of the year, while continuing to use Columbus Central Veterinary Hospital for emergency veterinary needs.
