HAMILTON, NJ – Hamilton Township Mayor Jeff Martin is pleased to share that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Green Acres Program recently awarded the Township with a grant to improve two ponds located at Sayen Gardens.
Sayen Gardens, located on Hughes Drive, was acquired by Hamilton Township in 1987 from the late Fred Sayen with the help of funding from the NJDEP Green Acres program. The Township converted the land into a botanical garden shortly after the acquisition. As part of the maintenance plan, the Township applied for and was awarded over $310,000 in funding through Green Acres to restore two of the main ponds at Sayen Gardens to recreate healthy habitats and conserve water.
“Sayen Gardens is one of Hamilton’s beloved gems that we want to maintain not just for its beauty but to make more sustainable for the future,” stated Mayor Martin. “Using grant funds to help revitalize our community without impacting our taxpayers’ wallets is something my administration will continue to seek out.”
The restoration of the first pond, located on the southern end of the park adjacent to Mercer Street, will include dredging the pond and stream to remove silt and sediment, remove invasive vegetation, and apply aquatic herbicide to deter future growth. The restoration of the second pond, located at the far northern end of the park, closest to the park maintenance building, will entail removing the existing 30-year-old koi pond to replace the rubber liner and filters.
