HARRISON ANNOUNCES POLICY STATEMENT ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE

[January 29, 2020 – Longport, New Jersey] – This week, Brigid Callahan Harrison, Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s second congressional district, met with leaders at NARAL Pro-Choice America, which works to protect abortion access across the country and engages in lobbying, political action, and advocacy efforts to oppose restrictions on abortion and expand access to abortion and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, an advocate for the legal and political protection of reproductive rights.

The following is a summary statement Brigid provided to each group regarding reproductive
rights and reproductive justice:

“I am pro-choice. A woman’s health decisions should be between her and her doctor. The federal government should have no say on when, how, or with whom women decide to have a child, and that includes women who are covered on Medicaid, employees of the federal government working overseas, or active duty military serving abroad.

“In New Jersey, I was a vocal critic of Chris Christie’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood. For many New Jersey women, Christie’s decision endangered their health, as sexually-transmitted disease rates increased and the number of cancer-detecting breast exams offered to women receiving preventative health care in Planned Parenthood clinics plummeted.

“In Congress, I will passionately advocate for funding for Planned Parenthood, and fight all efforts to restrict a woman’s access to safe, affordable family planning and reproductive health services, including supporting efforts to rescind the Global Gag Rule.”
