Henry Expresses Support for Social Security Tax Freedom Act
September 16, 2024
Senator Owen Henry (R-12) sent a letter to Congressman Jeff Van Drew to express support for Van Drew’s legislation that would remove federal income taxes on Social Security payments.
“With the cost of living in New Jersey continuing to rise, especially for basic necessities, our seniors are feeling the pinch more than ever,” wrote Sen. Henry. “Eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security benefits is a common-sense solution that would provide immediate relief to those who have worked hard their entire lives and now deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.”

Dear Congressman Van Drew,
I am writing to commend you for introducing H.R. 9359, The Social Security Tax Freedom Act, and to offer my full support for this important legislation.
Many seniors in my district depend heavily on Social Security as their primary source of income, and the idea of taxing those received benefits adds an unnecessary financial strain that we simply cannot ignore.
With the cost of living in New Jersey continuing to rise, especially for basic necessities, our seniors are feeling the pinch more than ever. Eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security benefits is a common-sense solution that would provide immediate relief to those who have worked hard their entire lives and now deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
I look forward to sharing this fair and reasonable proposal with my constituents as it acknowledges the real challenges facing retirees today. Every dollar counts for New Jerseyans living on fixed incomes and the double taxation of social security benefits amounts to nothing more than government-sanctioned theft.
Thank you for your continued dedication to improving the lives of our seniors.
Sincerely,
Senator Owen Henry
