HISTORIC LANDMARK AND FORMER POLICE STATION REOPENS IN DOWNTOWN PATERSON, SIGNALING SHIFT FOR ENTIRE CITY

On November 4th 2019, the meticulously restored Beaux-Arts building on 111 Washington Street will officially reopen, marking a turning point for the city of Paterson and setting an example for historic preservation for the entire region.

111 Washington Street sits at a location that can be traced back to the earliest days of the nation, the original home for Peter Colt, co-founder of the city of Paterson and a contemporary of Alexander Hamilton.

Since then, the site has taken on a range of critical purposes for the city — ranging from City Hall to The Paterson Police Station. It has survived two devastating fires including the Great Fire of 1902 and another in 1980, and has bore witness across three centuries to the industrial boom, fall, and recovery of the city.

Drost Development was more than excited to acquire the property, “I was drawn to restoring the property back to its former glory both from a conservationist perspective as well as an economic one,” Developer/ Owner Brian Drost Jr. stated. “The bones of the building demonstrated craftsmanship and historical pedigree that are rarely available on the market and I believe the building is a symbol of Paterson’s resilience”

Originally designed by renowned architect William T. Fanning in 1905, today’s building has been painstakingly restored, with its signature limestone Beaux-Arts façade blackened by soot for decades brought back to its pristine state.

Every detail — from the classical wrought iron staircase down to the signature green glass police station lanterns — have been reimagined for 21st century life with a careful lens on retaining its historic significance.

With 12 state-of-the-art office suites, the building will cater to the emerging influx of entrepreneurial, tech, medical, law, education and creative talent that have invested in Paterson’s rebirth. Visitors will be able to enter a formal lobby adorned with custom paneling, marble stairs, as well as enjoy a manicured courtyard with plantings for a unique green oasis in the downtown area.

For post-industrial cities like Paterson, the revitalization of 111 Washington Street and its neighboring buildings designed by prominent architects Fred Wesley Wentworth and Carrere & Hastings serves as a beacon for how cities can evolve while reclaiming their heritage.

As part of its restoration efforts, Drost Development has been awarded the recipient of the; Stewardship Award for Outstanding Historic Rehabilitation of a Paterson Historic Commercial Building, which was formally presented in a ceremony on September 25th, 2019.

At the awards ceremony Paterson Mayor, Andrew Sayegh said,

“ Paterson is profoundly grateful to Brian Drost Jr. of Drost Development for investing in our city. His robust restoration project will have a tremendous impact on our development downtown.”
