Hometown Hero Club Founder Ashton Burrell Wins New Jersey Governor’s Jefferson Award For His Leadership And Innovation

{Highland Park, NJ} – Hometown Hero Club Founder Ashton Burrell has won the New Jersey Governor’s Jefferson Award – one of the highest awards in the state – for his leadership and innovation. The award recognizes Burrell’s work directing his mentorship program of 10 years, L.I.V.E. (Life In Visions Of Evolution), which has impacted 1,500 students ages of 9 to 19 from different paths and cultures. The focus of the program is to develop future leaders so they earn their high school diplomas, advance to professional or academic circles, and ultimately become of service to their local communities.

The program maintains a 100% high school graduation rate. “We change the trajectory of these young people,” Burrell says, ”by reinforcing fundamentals of life, introducing concepts required for adulthood – like opening a bank account – and emphasizing the value of loving one another. I believe in taking what was poured into me, then pouring it into them, so they can pour it into others.”

Burrell, a graduate of Lincoln University with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, is the founder of Transforming New World Consulting, the umbrella organization for LIVE. He is the youngest Chairman of the Human Relations Council for the State of New Jersey, and is a member of the NAACP New Brunswick Branch Executive Board. Burrell was previously recognized with the Johnson and Johnson MLK Community Service Award. With a commitment to service that runs deep, Burrell has orchestrated marches and rallies for social justice, petitioned corporations for fairness and diversity in hiring practices, and collaborated with politicians to influence infrastructure and community revitalization decisions. Additionally, he aided in structuring a free groceries program for students in Highland Park. “Even when school was closed, we fed more than two dozen families every week,” he says.
