Houghtaling & Downey: SCOTUS Decision on Sports Betting a Victory for New Jersey Gaming Industry, Economy
Assembly Members are Sponsors of Legislation to Allow Sports Betting at NJ Casinos and Racetracks
(TRENTON) – Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey (D-Monmouth) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to allow sports betting in New Jersey:
“This decision stands to directly impact Monmouth County — the home to the Monmouth Park Racetrack and Freehold Raceway — not to mention the state at large. In order to expedite this process, we have already introduced a bill that would allow this form of gambling at New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks. We are confident this decision will positively impact our local economy and provide job security to the countless individuals employed by this industry,” said Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling.
“We fully support the Supreme Court’s decision to allow sports betting in New Jersey. Our racetracks have struggled in recent years but we are confident our bill is just what the industry needs to excite and attract customers once again. We look forward to guiding New Jersey through this process to ensure we implement this change quickly but effectively to gain the most benefit for New Jersey and for customers. This will ultimately help taxpayers by bringing in more State revenue, as well,” said Assemblywoman Joann Downey.
Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey introduced bill (A3911) on May 7 that would allow casinos in Atlantic City and racetracks in this State to conduct wagering on professional and collegiate sport or athletic events.
