House GOP Passes Tax Hikes on New Jersey
This afternoon the House of Representatives passed the GOP tax bill that raises taxes on the people of New Jersey. Democratic candidate for the 11th congressional district of New Jersey Mikie Sherrill responded with the following statement:
“Today House Republicans voted to hike taxes on the middle-class families of New Jersey. The people of the 11th district are not going to forget that Congressman Frelinghuysen voted yes on the budget bill that laid the groundwork for the elimination of the state and local income and sales tax deductions and the capping of the property tax deduction. When it counted the most, Congressman Frelinghuysen did not stand up for his constituents.
This shameful bill targets New Jersey and forces our families to bankroll a tax cut for large corporations and the wealthiest one percent. We need tax reform that helps grow our middle class, not a corporate giveaway masquerading as real tax reform. This bill fails to accomplish even that basic goal.”
New Jersey sends $31 billion in federal taxes to Washington each year. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, the GOP tax bill will cost New Jersey $137 million more in taxes. More than half of the residents of the 11th congressional district take the state and local sales and income tax deductions, which will be completely eliminated under this bill.
