Housing Advocates to Hold Virtual Rally to Protect NJ Affordable Housing Trust Fund

The New Jersey Statehouse and Capitol Building In Trenton

New Jersey legislators, residents, and housing advocates will hold a rally tomorrow, May 7 at 11 a.m., to urge elected officials in the Garden State to protect the NJ Affordable Housing Trust Fund from a raid proposed in the FY22 budget. The proposal diverts $57 million legally intended to create affordable homes for low- and moderate-income families into other programs, some for higher-income families. The proposal comes just two years after the Murphy administration, working closely with housing advocates, kept his 2017 campaign promise to end a decade of Trust Fund raids.

WHO: The Housing and Community Development Network of NJ, community developers, and housing advocates, including representatives from Garden State Episcopal CDC, NJ Institute for Social Justice, Paterson Habitat for Humanity, Region 9 Housing Corporation, Parkside Business & Community in Partnership, and the Affordable Housing Alliance. The rally will also include personal stories from impacted residents who have benefited from living in affordable homes.

State legislators include: Sen. Vin Gopal (LD-11), Sen. Nellie Pou (LD-35), Assembly Housing Committee Chair Asm. Benjie Wimberly (LD-35), Assembly Community Development and Affairs Committee Chair Asw. Shavonda Sumter (LD-35), Assembly Community Development and Affairs Committee Vice Chair Asw. Britnee Timberlake (LD-34), Asw. Mila Jasey (LD-27), and Asw. Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (LD-15).
