Housing Advocates Praise Advancement of Fair Housing Reform Legislation

TRENTON – The NJ Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today voted to advance legislation reforming fair housing obligations. On the bill (S50/A4), Staci Berger, president and chief executive officer of the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) issued the following statement:

“We applaud the Senate Committee for approving the reforms to affordable housing obligations which will help our network of over 275 members continue to do what they do best, build healthy and affordable homes for NJ residents. These reforms promote long-term affordability by extending and protecting deed restrictions that provide housing security so that towns are not caught in the hamster wheel of creating more homes while losing others.

“For over 35 years, our non-profit members and other housing champions have worked tirelessly to make sure our state is a place everyone can afford to call home. We believe that housing is a human right, and this legislative will help us to HouseNJ, ensuring housing security, stability, and affordability for all residents for generations to come. Thank you to Senator Singleton and Senate President Scutari for their leadership on this issue and we encourage a yes vote by the entire Senate so the bill can be signed into law by Governor Murphy.”
