Hudson County Democratic Black Caucus Endorses Mayor Fulop and Council Team

Countywide Black Leaders Add to Growing Support for Mayor Fulop’s Team

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Leaders of the Hudson County Democratic Black Caucus are endorsing Mayor Steven Fulop and his Council team in the upcoming citywide election. Citing the Fulop administration’s unprecedented investments in the south side of the city, its effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic, its success in reducing crime while making the Jersey City Police Department more diverse and responsive to the community, its commitment to building more affordable housing and more, the caucus joins a growing coalition of elected officials, community leaders, small business owners and more who are supporting Team Fulop.

“The investments that Jersey City is making in the Black community under Mayor Fulop’s leadership have the potential to be truly transformative,” said Hudson County Commissioner Jerry Walker. “Mayor Fulop is addressing the needs of residents by creating new job and apprenticeship opportunities, ensuring that local residents will be ready to obtain high-paying jobs at major infrastructure programs like the Gateway project. He’s also worked to improve city recreation programs and after school programs like Team Walker to give our children an outlet and opportunities to excel in sports and other activities. I was happy to receive Mayor Fulop’s support in my last election, and along with my fellow members of the Hudson County Democratic Black Caucus I’m excited to endorse Mayor Fulop and to continue working closely with him.”

Mayor Fulop has directed an unprecedented level of public investment to the city’s southern end, highlighted by the new $120 million Public Safety Complex now under construction at the City Hall Annex at Jackson Square. By redirecting vital city functions as well as hundreds of city employees to the area, Mayor Fulop and his team are helping to revitalize this section of the city to support local small businesses and entrepreneurs.

“Since my time in office, Mayor Fulop has shown to be a strong advocate for several initiatives and issues that I find valuable at the state level, from championing efforts to fund our public schools, supporting the establishment of a civilian complaint review board, and the referendum to help fund the arts; among other things,” said Assemblywoman Angela McKnight (D-31). “I welcome the opportunity to work with Mayor Fulop in 2021 and beyond to make Jersey City safer and to provide a better quality of life for all residents throughout the City.”

Mayor Fulop has reformed the Jersey City Police Department and significantly expanded its capabilities during his tenure in office. This has resulted in safer neighborhoods, more community policing, investments in police worn body cameras and the hiring of more Black and Hispanic residents to make the police more representative of the city.

“Jersey City’s biggest strength is our people and our diversity, and I’m incredibly proud to have earned the support of some of the strongest leaders in the Black community,” said Mayor Steve Fulop. “It’s always been clear that our city won’t succeed without investing in every corner of our community, and making sure that the progress we’ve seen in some neighborhoods is extended to every other area and that we spread new opportunities to all of our residents are our highest priorities.”

Mayor Fulop is running for his third term alongside a Council slate that includes incumbents Joyce Watterman, Daniel Rivera, Denise Ridley, Mira Prinz-Arey, Rich Boggiano, Yousef Saleh and Jermaine Robinson, as well as Hudson County Democratic Chair Amy DeGise. The final member of the Mayor’s slate will be announced soon.

The Hudson County Democratic Black Caucus includes Senator Sandra D. Cunningham, Assemblywoman McKnight, County Commissioner Walker, County Register Diane Coleman, Board of Education member LeKendrick Shaw and Council members Watterman, Ridley and Robinson.
