HUDSON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR SAMPSON AND WALKER FOR NEW JERSEY GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Hudson County, NJ – Hudson County Democratic Organization Chair Craig Guy and Vice-Chair Mareilka Diaz announced their support for County Commissioner Jerry Walker and incumbent Assemblyman Will Sampson in their campaign to represent the 31st legislative district in the New Jersey General Assembly.  Walker and Sampson’s selections follow months of discussions with HCDO leadership and Democrats throughout the district.  The Democratic Primary is Tuesday, June 10th.

Guy and Diaz released the following statement announcing their support for Walker and Sampson:

“We have consistently said that we will be gathering input and data from Hudson County Democrats as we proceed through this selection process and we believe these endorsements show that time was well spent.  This process once again had the benefit of an overabundance of qualified candidates, but we believe Jerry Walker and Will Sampson’s dedication to serving the public will best serve district residents during these turbulent times.  They have both shown themselves to be fighters, willing to stand up and take the lead when their constituents need it most and those qualities are exactly what we need right now.  We look forward to Jerry and Will going to Trenton to secure critical fiscal aid for district families and working to provide access to safe and affordable housing options.”

“Facing this election, I am fully prepared for the challenges ahead,” stated Sampson. “Our campaign transcends mere politics; it’s a commitment to our constituents’ welfare, ensuring that our working families, seniors, and everyday citizens receive the representation they rightfully deserve in Trenton. Throughout my terms, I have been instrumental in implementing significant initiatives like the Senior Freeze, ANCHOR, and Stay NJ programs, relentlessly advocating for workers’ rights and better conditions for our families.”

“With Jerry Walker joining me, we amplify our strength and resolve. Jerry’s deep connection with our community and his fervent advocacy are invaluable assets. Together, we pledge to champion transformative changes and tangible results, not just engage in political rhetoric,” Sampson declared.

“I have worked for decades to try and provide opportunities for children and families in the place where I grew up and raised a family of my own,” said Walker. “I’ve long maintained the importance of providing constructive alternatives to negative influences in the inner-city through my non-profit, Team Walker, and I look forward to the opportunity to bring my three D’s to Trenton to continue to serve my community—Dedication, Determination and Discipline. Having led my team to the NCAA Finals, I understand the true meaning of teamwork, and I am ready to bring that same commitment and leadership to the people of the 31st District.”

A staunch advocate for working families, union members, and seniors, Sampson has a well-established record of impactful governance and is eager to sustain his efforts in improving constituents’ lives. In 2022 Will Sampson made history as the first African American legislator to ever serve in office out of Bayonne when he became a member of the New Jersey General Assembly.  Born and raised in Bayonne, Sampson is a member of the International Longshoremen’s Union (ILA), Local 1588 and has long prioritized the importance of working within our communities to improve the lives of people throughout the district.  As an Assemblyman, Sampson has even further sharpened his focus on his service to the public as the Char of the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee and the Vice-Chair of the Assembly Labor Committee.

Jerry Walker has devoted his life to serving the public.  Currently a third-term County Commissioner representing Hudson County’s District Three, Jerry Walker is a former St. Anthony High School, Seton Hall, and NBA basketball player and the co-founder and CEO of the non-profit organization Team Walker. Team Walker provides academic and athletic afterschool and summer programs for over 500 Hudson County youth, headquartered in the Team Walker Community Center, located in the heart of Jersey City.

Commissioner Walker has served on numerous local organizations, including actively serving his high school and collegiate alma maters. He also serves as a Supervisor for the Jersey City Department of Recreation.  On the Board, County Commissioner Jerry Walker serves on the Economic Development and Housing, Environmental and Human Services, Contract Review, Public Safety and Purchasing Committees, as well as Chairman of the Family Services Committee, liaison on the Hudson County Planning Board, and the Board’s representative to the NJ Association of Counties.

Sampson and Walker are proud to represent the Hudson County Democratic Organization, offering seasoned, committed leadership to Hudson County’s residents.
