Hudson County Democrats Congratulate Newly Sworn-In State Legislature, Including First Term Assemblyman William Sampson

County Democratic Leaders Express Excitement for the New Hudson Delegation

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Chairwoman Amy DeGise and the Hudson County Democratic Organization are congratulating the newly sworn-in members of the county’s state legislative delegation, especially Assemblyman William Sampson who now begins his first term serving the 31st legislative district. As a working class union leader who has dedicated years to fighting for the middle class, the HCDO is eager to watch Assemblyman Sampson continue fighting for his constituents in Trenton.

“I’m so excited to see this new group of legislators being sworn in,” said HCDO Chair Amy DeGise. “As an active union member, Assemblyman Sampson is dedicated to fighting for the working class and delivering more jobs and opportunities for Hudson residents. I look forward to this new session and to working with Assemblyman Sampson and our entire delegation to keep moving Hudson County forward.”

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis is particularly enthusiastic for the start of Assemblyman Sampson’s term. The new Bayonne Assemblyman was elected to represent the 31st district in November and is now the first Black legislator to be elected from Bayonne. As a proud union member and a leader in the International Longshoremen’s Union, Assemblyman Sampson also adds to the state legislature’s diversity by representing the blue collar workers who make up the backbone of Hudson County. His extensive organizing and leadership experience has prepared him to be an effective and dedicated member of the NJ State Legislature.

“Assemblyman Sampson’s election marks an important step forward in Bayonne,” said Mayor Davis. “He is the first Black Assemblymember from Bayonne, as well as the first labor leader to be elected to represent our city in the State Legislature in many years. This kind of representation is critical to ensuring that we are able to serve all of our residents. Assemblyman Sampson was born and raised here in Bayonne, and through his leadership as the political liaison for his union he already has the experience to hit the ground running now that he’s been sworn in. I look forward to working with him over the course of his first term.”

Hudson’s legislative delegation is now the most diverse it has been in county history including four women, three African Americans, three Latinos and one AAPI member out of its nine legislators.
