HUGIN CAMPAIGN SLAMS CORRUPT MENENDEZ & LAPDOG PALLONE

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — Today Hugin for Senate Communications Director Megan Piwowar issued the following statement:

“Corrupt Bob Menendez and his lapdog Frank Pallone have no shame and their dishonesty knows no bounds.  The Obama Justice Department reviewed the case and declined to intervene.  The real story here is why hasn’t Bob Menendez repudiated the savage treatment of patients by his convicted felon ‘dear friend’ Salomon Melgen.

“Dr. Melgen, and I use that term loosely, was described as an ‘abusive’ eye doctor, who conducted ‘horrifying’ and ‘disgraceful’ treatments on his patients, ‘zapping them with lasers’ that threatened to blind them for life.

“Menendez’s buddy also split single dose vials of expensive eye drugs so he could steal tens of millions of dollars from Medicare, which ultimately had him convicted on 67 felony counts and landed him in jail for 17 years. Bob Menendez said he had ‘sympathy’ for Melgen.  What about his patients, Senator?”

Background:

“ABUSIVE, UNCONSCIONABLE, AND HORRIFYING” | “One of the nation’s top retina specialists used words like ‘abusive, unconscionable, and horrifying’ this week to describe treatment Palm Beach County ophthalmologist Dr. Salomon Melgen gave patients. ‘It’s terrible and disgraceful and I’m embarrassed for our entire profession,’ Dr. Julia Haller, ophthalmologist-in-chief at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, said while reviewing patient charts that showed Melgen billed Medicare for diagnostic tests of prosthetic and blind eyes that she said were clearly beyond saving.’” (Jane Musgrave, “‘Top Retina Specialist Extremely Critical Of Melgen In Fraud Trial,” Palm Beach Post, 3/29/17)

LAZERING PATIENTS EYES | “But soon after Melgen began working at the Aker Kasten Eye Center in 2002, optometrists began voicing concern that every patient Melgen examined was receiving a diagnosis of wet macular degeneration and being zapped with lasers, Aker said. ‘That was what was unsettling,’ Aker this week told a federal jury that will decided whether Melgen bilked Medicare out of as much as $105 million. ‘It seemed there was an epidemic of wet macular degeneration with these patients.”‘ (Jane Musgrave, “‘Top Retina Specialist Extremely Critical Of Melgen In Fraud Trial,” Palm Beach Post, 3/29/17)
