ICYMI: Menendez Desperate Attacks Extend to SCOTUS
In a desperate move, career politician Sen. Bob Menendez resorted to fear-mongering and doomsday predictions yesterday about the Supreme Court nominee before his name was even announced. Sen. Menendez’s dereliction of his constitutional duty to thoroughly examine and participate in the rigorous confirmation process of Supreme Court nominees before they’ve even started is just another example of why he’s unfit for office.
The people of New Jersey deserve a Senator who will be thoughtful and make decisions based on the facts, not jump to conclusions for partisan political reasons. Sen. Menendez should take notice of his colleagues, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN), who refused to make outrageous statements like Sen. Menendez and instead committed to fulfilling their constitutional duty to vet and examine the nominee.
- “I have no doubt that many members of Congress and outside groups will announce how they stand on the nominee before doing their due diligence and instead just take a partisan stance — but that isn’t how I work,” Heitkamp said. - Manchin also declined to take an immediate position on Kavanaugh, though he said on Monday night that he is “particularly” interested in Kavanaugh’s views on health care, one of two issues — alongside abortion rights — that Democrats and progressive groups are building their Supreme Court messaging around.” (Politico, “Senate swing votes prepare for SCOTUS onslaught,” 07/09/2018)
- “As I have said, part of my job as Senator includes thoroughly considering judicial nominations, including to the Supreme Court. I will take the same approach as I have previously for a Supreme Court vacancy. Following the president’s announcement, I will carefully review and consider the record and qualifications of Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” said Donnelly (Sen. Joe Donnelly, “Donnelly Statement on Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh,” 07/09/2018)
