Hunterdon County Vocational School District
Announces 2020/2021 Adult & Continuing Education Courses
Offerings Offer Opportunities in Unprecedented Times to Gain New Skills, Change Careers

JULY 28, 2020, FLEMINGTON, N.J.– The pandemic has shined a spotlight on careers that have stability despite public health or economic conditions. It also has, unfortunately, caused many to realize the instability in their own careers when faced with layoffs and extended furloughs. The Hunterdon County Vocational School District welcomes learners of all ages to get a fresh start with a wide range of classes, certification courses and apprenticeship programs offered through its Adult & Continuing Education (ACE) program. The 2020-2021 Course Catalog hits mailboxes in early August – just in time to lay out a plan for the coming months.

For those out of work and lacking the funds needed for tuition, the Hunterdon County Vocational School District ACE program is affiliated with One-Stop Career Centers serving Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties. These Centers provide information on grants for reimbursement of training and education of up to $4,000 for those who are unemployed and qualify.

“Many people can attend our programs essentially tuition free with support from a One-Stop Career Center, and in as little as 10 months, walk away certified to start a new career,” said Adult & Continuing Education Coordinator Christina Shockley.

Among the many programs offered by ACE are those providing training for consistently stable occupations like automotive technician, phlebotomist, heavy equipment operator and veterinary assistant. ACE also coordinates apprenticeship programs in electrical, HVAC and plumbing. Although the apprenticeship programs take longer to complete, enrolled students often find work, as employers are willing to invest in them as they demonstrate a commitment to the trade and furthering their skills.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, Hunterdon County Vocational School District’s Adult & Continuing Education program will largely offer in-person classes, as the intimate class sizes enable social distancing. The practical, hands-on experiences students need in many of their courses will come first, in the early part of the semester, while the theory portion will be accessible online. This was planned to account for possible changes in public health conditions, especially in the winter months.

The ACE program also is offering virtual-only class options for introductory and intermediate classes in Microsoft Word and Excel for those who need to brush-up on their workplace skills.

The largest is Hunterdon County Polytech Career & Technical High School (polytech.hcvsd.org), which is the district’s shared-time high school that prepares students for a seamless transition to college and career paths.
