Hunterdon County Vocational School District Hosts
Virtual Information Sessions September – December

Learn more about diverse career-technical program offerings

Flemington, N.J. – Hunterdon County Vocational School District (HCVSD) has planned a series of virtual information sessions to safely provide a way for prospective students and their parents to learn about the district’s wide range of career and technical programs. The information sessions run monthly, September through December, with designated sessions for the district’s full-time Animal Science Program and science-based Academies, of interest to middle school-aged students, and a series of information sessions for HCVSD’s shared-time programs through Polytech Career & Technical High School, of interest to rising 11th and 12th grade students.

Families can sign up for one or more information sessions through Google forms linked on the hcvsd.org website. Look in the dropdown menu under the “Community & Student Resources” top navigation. Participants will view a short presentation, including photos and videos to highlight the district’s customized learning spaces, and then engage in a Q-and-A with district representatives to learn both specific program details and address broader questions about precautions to ensure the safe delivery of career and technical education this year, as well as about the application process and timeline.

Virtual information sessions for Hunterdon County Polytech run:

  • Thursday, September 24 @ 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 10 @ 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, November 12 @ 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 12 @ 10 a.m.
Virtual information sessions for HCVSD’s full-time Academies and Animal Science Program run:
  • Saturday, September 26 @ 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, October 8 @ 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 14 @ 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, December 10 @ 6 p.m.

The information sessions lead up to the district’s application deadline of Dec. 18, 2020 for all 2021-2022 full-time and shared-time programs. All applications are accepted online through hcvsd.org.

“We encourage students and families who want to learn more about our district and the many values of pursuing career and technical education (CTE) to join us for a virtual information session,” Dr. Todd Bonsall, HCVSD superintendent, said. “Our educational approach focuses on student outcomes, often leading to greater engagement, better performance and a deeper understanding of the link between education and career goals. Students leave us with knowledge and hands-on experiences that guide them in taking meaningful next steps toward reaching those college or career goals. In fact, more than 75 percent of CTE graduates pursue higher education or additional technical training.”

HCVSD offers five distinct schools, which include an Adult & Continuing Education school, Polytech Career & Technical High School and three full-time Academies. HCVSD’s Adult & Continuing Education school serves learners of all ages with programs that often have rolling admissions. Individuals aged 16 to 24 who currently are out of school and facing challenges can receive financial support and mentorship through the Youth Employment Services (YES) Program as they complete coursework and training through HCVSD’s Adult & Continuing Education division.

Polytech’s 12 core program areas enable students to explore career and technical options in a hands-on environment, while subprograms offer further specialization. Unlike a traditional high school, each program offers college credits, licensing, credentials, specific job skills or certifications. Students attend their home high schools for all academic requirements and are bused to Polytech for half-day programs. Polytech courses run for a full year to comprise 20 elective credits with most students starting as juniors.

Polytech launches its first full-time, four-year program in Animal Science this academic year. The district’s other four-year offerings are science-based Academies: the Biomedical Sciences Academy, the Computer Science & Applied Engineering Academy and the Environmental Sustainability & Engineering Academy. The Academies are academically rigorous and follow a comprehensive, highly focused curriculum. All three offer opportunities to earn college credits and participate in internships and other hands-on learning experiences.
