I ask the question, who is anyone to question how we identify?

During the Trenton 2022 General Election, I was appalled when Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg, a candidate for South Ward council, was dragged into court by her opponent to answer questions about her Latina heritage. Jenna never identified as strictly Latina. Jenna identifies as a woman, a professional, a daughter, a sister, a caretaker, a provider, an advocate, and so much more. I asked the question, who is anyone to question how we identify?

However, once her opponent’s campaign manufactured this false narrative within the community, they attempted something much more sinister. They hammered away at the message that Jenna isn’t “one of us”. The implication, that bi-racial individuals do not have the right to self-identify, is despicable and dehumanizing.

This reminds me of Donald Trump’s recent accusation that Kamala Harris switches her identity from Asian one day to black the next. We recognize individuals for the content of their character, not the color of their skin. That’s what makes us Americans.

I encourage every South Ward voter to reject the divisiveness and deception her opponent brings to each and every door canvassed. I ask you to vote for Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg on Tuesday, November 5th and put a stop to the misogyny, racism, and intimidation her opponent will bring to City Hall if elected.
