Ileana Montes Announces LD21 Assembly Candidacy

I am delighted to announce my candidacy for New Jersey State Assembly in Legislative District 21. As an attorney, having represented people from all walks of life, I know the significant impact legislative decisions make on people’s lives. I passionately fight for my clients; families that struggle to make ends meet, that cannot afford healthcare, single parents, disabled persons, parents that battle with their children’s learning disabilities. As an Assemblywoman, I will bring my passion and experience to make a positive difference for the citizens of our state.

Due to the Pandemic and the economic downturn in New Jersey, our state will have to come up with innovative ways to continue financing Medicaid, unemployment, and other programs that are in greater demand. As an Assemblywoman, I will work tirelessly to attract more businesses to our communities so that we can strengthen our economy and create more jobs. Despite the financial challenges we face, I will fight fiercely to control the increase of property taxes. The Garden State is home to the highest tax levies on property in the nation. New Jersey residents are being forced to leave the state and legislators must act now to lower the cost of living. We need to incentivize municipalities to collaborate in the pursuit of meaningful shared services so that our state can operate more efficiently. Equally important, is the advocacy for an improved transportation system for our commuters. Public transit is the key to upward mobility for many families and is crucial to support the continued growth and prosperity of our state. I will join the ongoing fight for adequate, long-term, and sustainable funding for transit.

We must acknowledge that the demographics of LD21 are changing and that the ideologies of the incumbent legislators do not reflect the current views of our community. As our state continues to tackle the ongoing challenges in the areas of pensions, climate change, women’s rights, marijuana legalization, licenses for undocumented immigrants, and many other important issues, our district needs new leadership. We need representatives that will bring a fresh perspective and diversity to Trenton.

For the last 20 years, I have dedicated myself to serving others. In addition to my legal practice, I served as director of the Division on Women, director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Office for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, and as president of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey. I have been a member of numerous professional committees and have executed my functions in a professional and conscientious manner, always standing up for what is right. My experience has given me a clear understanding of the needs of our community and makes me uniquely qualified to serve immediately and effectively in the New Jersey Assembly. Therefore, I announce my candidacy with the confidence that I can win both the democratic nomination and the election.
